Nine years ago, Ally Nyagawa lost both of his legs. Today, the Form Three student at Ifunda Technical Secondary School in Njombe is walking confidently toward a future he refuses to limit.
Ally began using prosthetic legs while still in primary school. Before then, he crawled on the ground and later relied on a wheelchair and friends to get to school and move around. He says those days made him feel dependent but prosthetic legs changed his life.
Today, Ally attends school independently, participates in sports and carries out many everyday activities. He can even ride a bicycle and motorcycle and drive a car.
His journey has not been easy. After his disability, he was rejected and abandoned by his father while still young. But his mother never gave up on him. With her support and help from sponsors, Ally continued his education and has consistently performed well in school. His achievements eventually helped rebuild his relationship with his father, who is now back in his life and supports him.
Ally recently visited INUKA Rehabilitation Hospital’s Orthosis & Prosthesis Workshop for the first time after previously receiving prosthetic services in Dar es Salaam. He says he has been impressed by the quality of the prosthetic legs and services at INUKA and believes people living with limb loss should know that such services are available.
His own experience has inspired his greatest dream: to become an orthotics and prosthetics specialist and help others regain mobility and independence.
For Ally, prosthetic legs are more than artificial limbs they are a pathway to confidence, education and independence.
His message is simple: losing a limb does not mean losing your dreams.
